India’s FMCG market grows 9.5% as festive demand begins to build

The festive season is beginning to make its mark on India’s retail market.

With Navratri, Dussehra and Diwali approaching, September brought stronger momentum to FMCG consumption across the country. India’s FMCG market recorded 9.5% growth in September, signalling a strong start to the festive build-up.

For consumers, the weeks ahead mean celebrations, family gatherings, gifting and increased shopping. For FMCG brands, the period brings an equally important need: ensuring products are available where and when consumers are ready to buy.

A Strong Start to the Festive Season

The September numbers show how festive momentum is beginning to influence key consumption categories. Chocolates & Confectionery grew 11.2%, making it one of the strongest-performing categories in the month. With sweets, chocolates and confectionery closely associated with celebrations and gifting, the category is well positioned as festive shopping gathers pace.

Beverages also grew 11.1%, reflecting another important part of festive consumption. From family gatherings to celebrations, beverages become an essential part of increased consumption occasions during the season. Together, these categories offer an early glimpse of how festive demand is moving through the FMCG market.

The Festive Calendar Is Setting the Stage

India’s festive season stretches across several major occasions. Navratri begins on October 11, Dussehra falls on October 20 and Diwali arrives on November 8. These celebrations bring increased household activity, social gatherings, gifting and retail purchases. The September growth comes just ahead of this period, making the timing significant.

As consumers begin preparing for celebrations, brands need to prepare for the corresponding rise in demand. Strong festive performance is not only about having the right products. It also depends on ensuring those products reach the right outlets in sufficient quantities and at the right time.

Non-Urban Markets Add to the Momentum

The festive story is also extending beyond India’s major cities. Non-urban FMCG growth reached 10.3% in September, compared with 8.2% in urban markets. This makes smaller towns and non-urban markets an important part of the festive opportunity. As consumption expands across these markets, FMCG brands need strong visibility across their wider retail networks.

The September data points towards a festive season where demand is spreading across geographies rather than being concentrated only in large urban centres.

What This Means for FMCG Brands

The festive season creates a short but significant window for brands. Higher demand needs to be matched with stronger distribution, accurate inventory planning and better retail execution. Brands need to know where demand is increasing, which outlets need replenishment and whether products are reaching shelves before consumers start shopping in larger numbers.

The September growth provides an early signal. India’s FMCG market is already moving into festive mode, and the brands prepared for the next wave of demand will be better positioned to capture the opportunity.
