The Legacy Of Kirana

There is always that one store.

The one that never needed a signboard, yet everyone knew where it was. The one where the owner didn’t ask what you wanted, because he already knew. The one where time seemed to slow down, even as the world outside kept changing.

Step inside, and it is never just a transaction. It is a memory.

Back when time moved slower

In the 1990s, life was simpler. Evenings meant children playing outside, families knowing each other, and routines that rarely changed.

At the corner of the street stood the kirana store.

A man behind the counter. A worn out ledger in his hand. Every entry written carefully, every customer remembered without effort. People didn’t just come here to buy things. They came to talk, to pause, to feel a sense of familiarity.

Among them was a little boy.

Every day after school, he would walk in with dust on his shoes and curiosity in his eyes. Sometimes he bought a chocolate, sometimes nothing at all. But the shopkeeper always noticed. Always smiled. And sometimes, without a word, placed a small chocolate in his hand.

As the world began to change

Years passed, and the world outside started moving faster.

Cities expanded. New brands appeared. Choices increased. Lives became busier.

The kirana changed too, quietly.

Shelves became fuller. Products became more diverse. The same store that once carried essentials began adapting to new demands. The ledger still existed, but so did a growing need for speed and efficiency.

The boy kept coming back, even as everything around him evolved.

A Story That Stays

Kirana stores were never just about selling goods. They were about building relationships that quietly stayed with you, no matter how much time passed.

The boy has grown up now. Life has taken him places.

Responsibilities have replaced routines.

But somewhere along the way, he still finds himself walking back into that same store.

Not out of habit.

But out of belonging.

Because some places do not just serve you for a moment.

They stay with you for a lifetime.

To bring this story to life, we created a short film that captures this journey across generations, where time moves forward but the feeling remains unchanged.

Watch the film here.

Back when time moved slower

As kiranas continue to evolve in a rapidly changing world, they do not need to become something else to stay relevant. They need the right support to grow.

Bizom helps digitise kirana stores by onboarding them onto the ONDC network, enabling them to serve digital consumers through various buyer apps. Moreover, through Bizom One, kiranas can procure goods digitally from their nearest distributor and also avail credit services for the same.
